Since when have federal agents been involved in petty car theft which no department cares about in the state . I have never seen a police go to someone's house because of a simple car theft even if they knew the car was at such and such a house. Now, if they have done a traffic stop then that would have made some sense but this is not adding up .

This vehicle might have been used as a sting operation and was stolen from the feds. Thats way there isn't a police report.

I don’t understand how it’s difficult to have all parties (bank/dealership/consumer) amend the loan agreement and remove the stolen vehicle vin and apply any payments made to a new loan agreement with a similar vehicle with similar value The only positive here is that the bank agreed they would not have to continue making payments for such vehicle due to it being involved in a fraud scheme

I worked for a dealership in mid-80's. One day state police showed up, 15 y.o. car( on lot) had been reported stolen, 14 yrs prior!! Same car had been traded/re-sold 6TIMES in interim! Wasn't privy to all details, but it was INTENSE situation for months!!

Even if the car was not in the national stolen car database, how did they get a clean title? Was the title in the car when it was stolen? Was there a lein from the original loan still active? Lots of questions unanswered by this story. It comes back to how did the dealership get a title on the car when they sold it and I assume (maybe incorrectly) the people borrowed money from a bank or other lending institution and that institution put a lien on the title seems to me they would have found an existing lien on the title that pre-dated theirs and banks don't like being 2nd in line for money. Something really fishy with this story.

I am going to go out on a limb here and state someone is getting fired at the dealership considering checking to see if the title is clean before selling is a legal requirement.

Dealers should be held liable for verifying Vin on any trade in in at least 3 places on the car.

Selling stolen merchandise is illegal. The dealership should have replaced that car immediately, not tell the buyer to call their insurance company. I would never buy a car from them after hearing this story of bad customer service.

Dealership had in their possession a stolen vehicle and illegally sold it profiting off. THIS IS A CRIME.

All nice and dandy.. but that also means that the dealership commited a crime when they signed the paperwork claiming to have clear title to it... maybe it's time some of these people get jail time...

If the dealership wants repeat business from their customers, they'd be wise to bend over backwards to assist this family. Otherwise they have damaged their public relationship and no one will buy from them again.

So the DEALERSHIP is TRAFFICKING STOLEN MERCHANDISE at least that what the States Attorney General is saying as it doesn't matter if the dealership knows they are or not.... This happens way to much so if a dealership isn't using there Scan tools to read the vin from the ECM to verify it's the vehicle they think it is then they are willfully TRAFFICKING STOLEN MERCHANDISE and the owner of the dealership should be arrested and the bank should come and take all the cars on the floor plan.
